A gorge where the Narmada river runs between soaring cliffs of ancient marble.

At Bhedaghat the Narmada river has carved a deep gorge through Proterozoic marble — limestone and dolomite that were buried, heated and recrystallised into marble long ago. The pale cliffs rise steeply on either side of the water, and the site is recognised by the Geological Survey of India as a National Geological Monument.

The gorge is a textbook example of how a river, given enough time, can slice straight through hard metamorphic rock to expose a cross-section of deep Earth history.
