India's mineral heartland — a stepped plateau of ancient rock carrying the country's richest coal and metal belts.

The Chotanagpur plateau is built on the Chhotanagpur Granite–Gneiss Complex, Precambrian crust worn down to a series of steps and pediplains. Down-faulted troughs across it trapped Gondwana coal measures, and the surrounding cratons carry iron, copper, mica and uranium.

This combination of coal and metal made it the “Ruhr of India”, home to Jamshedpur, Bokaro, the Damodar coalfields and much of the country’s heavy industry.
