A great crescent-shaped basin of ancient sediment on the Dharwar craton, rich in minerals and uranium.

The Cuddapah basin is a huge, sickle-shaped pile of Proterozoic sediments — quartzite, shale and limestone — laid down on the older Dharwar craton and gently folded along its eastern edge. It is one of India’s classic Purana (Proterozoic) basins.

Its rocks host barite, limestone and the important Tummalapalle uranium deposit, and its record of early sedimentary and biological activity makes it a key window on Proterozoic India.
