The largest river of peninsular India, revered as the Dakshin Ganga — the Ganga of the south.

Rising at Trimbakeshwar in the Western Ghats, the Godavari crosses almost the whole peninsula to reach the Bay of Bengal, the longest river of southern India. Much of its middle course follows the Pranhita–Godavari valley, a Gondwana rift now floored with coal.

Its wide delta near Rajahmundry is among the most fertile in India, and its length and sanctity earn it the name Dakshin Ganga.
