The sacred river of the south, whose delta has been the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu for two thousand years.

The Kaveri rises at Talakaveri in the Kodagu hills and flows east across the Deccan to the Bay of Bengal. Over hard crystalline rock it forms falls and islands — Shivanasamudra, Srirangapatna — before fanning into a broad, ancient delta.

That delta, tamed by the Grand Anicut (Kallanai) dam nearly two millennia ago, has been continuously irrigated ever since, making the river the lifeline of the Chola heartland.
