The second-largest east-flowing peninsular river, born high in the Western Ghats at Mahabaleshwar.

From a spring at Mahabaleshwar, the Krishna runs east across the Deccan lava plateau to the Bay of Bengal, gathering the Bhima, Tungabhadra and other tributaries on the way. It carves deep gorges through basalt and older crystalline rock before spreading into its delta.

Its waters drive some of India’s largest irrigation and hydro projects — Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam — and its delta interlocks with the Godavari’s along the coast.
