A slab of some of Earth's oldest continental crust — and possibly one of the planet's earliest patches of dry land.
The Singhbhum Craton is one of India’s ancient continental nuclei — a block of crust with rocks dating back to the Archean, older than three billion years. Cratons like this are the stable cores around which continents grow, and they preserve some of the oldest rock records on Earth.
Singhbhum has drawn particular attention because published research has suggested that some of the planet’s earliest emergent landmasses — dry land standing above the ancient oceans — may have formed here around 3.2 billion years ago, hinting at how the first continents rose.
The craton’s Iron Ore Group rocks and greenstone belts also make it one of India’s most important mineral provinces.
