One of the few large west-flowing rivers of peninsular India, running through a trough between the Satpura ranges to the Arabian Sea.

The Tapi (Tapti) rises near Multai in the Satpura hills and flows west to the Gulf of Khambhat at Surat — one of only a handful of major peninsular rivers to run westward instead of east.

Like the neighbouring Narmada, it follows a structural trough roughly parallel to the Satpuras; its short, steep course carries a heavy monsoon sediment load to a broad estuary.
