The longest lake in India and the heart of the Kerala backwaters.

Vembanad is a long, narrow backwater lagoon running parallel to the Arabian Sea behind a coastal sand barrier — a Holocene landform typical of the Kerala coast, where a chain of such lagoons is linked into a natural inland waterway.

A Ramsar site, it includes the famous Kuttanad farmland lying below sea level, and the Thanneermukkom barrage that keeps salt water out of the paddy during the dry season.
