One of the largest freshwater lakes in India, cradled in the tectonic basin of the Kashmir Valley.

Wular fills part of the floor of the Kashmir Valley, a Plio-Pleistocene intermontane basin ponded between the Himalaya and Pir Panjal and filled with lake sediments called Karewas. The Jhelum flows through it, and the lake acts as the valley’s great flood absorber.

A designated Ramsar wetland, it is fringed by marsh and floating gardens, though silt and encroachment have shrunk it markedly over the last century.
