The high pass that carries the road from the Kashmir Valley across the mountains toward Ladakh.

Zoji La, at about 3,500 m, breaches the Great Himalayan wall between Sonamarg and Dras. It is a low point in a barrier raised by continental collision, and marks a sharp climatic threshold — green, monsoon-fed slopes to the west, cold high desert to the east.

Snowbound for much of the year, it has long been the strategic gateway toward Ladakh, and a tunnel is being driven beneath it to keep the route open year-round.
